The ever rising Kefine has already made their presence known right now with their consistent pursuit of high quality sound that comes with a more than fair pricing. With their current releases such as the Quatio, Klean SV and Delci, all of their products possess a high degree of sound quality that manages to compete with products above their asking price. Kefine is now on a roll this year and to keep the momentum going, they have decided to launch an all new flagship, the Arnar. Equipped with a 14.5mm planar magnetic driver alongside a Knowles balanced armature, they are a new generation of hybrid that is tuned for a highly musical experience and priced at USD189, they are a flagship that comes without the flagship price tag. So how will Kefine Arnar perform? We shall find out here.

A huge thanks to Collin and Lina from Kefine for the sample pair of the Kefine Arnar for us to have an honest take. As usual, we are not affiliated nor taken any form of monetary exchange for this review and this review is solely an honest view of the product.

Packaging & Accessories

The packaging here is actually a professional yet simple black theme with a small cube box that has a simplistic design. Pretty standard packaging and straight to the point as usual of Kefine’s flair. Here’s what’s inside the box;

  • 1x Arnar Earphones
  • 1x Hard Carrying Case
  • 3x Pairs of Tuning Nozzles
  • 12x Pairs of Extra Ear Tips
  • 2x Ear Tip Storage Cases
  • 1x User Manual
  • 1x Quality Certificate
  • 1x 3.5mm Modular Head
  • 1x 4.4mm Modular Head
  • 1x Nozzle Guide Card

The accessories included here are top notch to say the least and it really feels like a premium flagship product indeed.

Design

The design here is where the Arnar manages to catch my attention. It is a 5 axis CNC aerospace grade aluminum alloy shell that is anodized in black and they have a unique pattern for their semi open back that takes inspiration from the symbolic Chinese window panels called the “Wish Windows” that covers the metal mesh beneath it. They are truly an eye-catching design and I personally feel that is the best IEM design of recent releases. The fit here is ergonomic and lightweight, suiting for all types of ear sizes.

Driving the Arnar is a custom-developed, full-size 14.5mm planar magnetic driver, paired with a Knowles balanced armature that reinforces detail and clarity, particularly in the higher frequencies. This hybrid driver configuration delivers the full-bodied, rich sound signature of a planar driver alongside the refined precision of a balanced armature working in tandem.

The nozzles here are replaceable as the same for all Kefine products and they come in 3 colour coded front mesh that gives a slightly different tuning where the stock pre-fitted silver is for a balanced sound, black for a warmer, bassier sound and gold for a brighter, detailed sound. The nozzles are made from stainless steel and well designed with a maximum of 5.5mm at the tip of the nozzle.

These Arnar are a semi open back with a large back metal mesh for the back venting of the planar and 2 pinhole vents on the inner side for pressure relief. Though having a rather large back vent, they isolate quite well and no sound leakage is present. Driver flex is non-existent, which indicates a well vented product.

The Arnar has a standard flush 0.78mm 2 pin connection that is quite tight and they are plated in gold.

Cable provided is a high end 4 core high purity silver-plated OFC with a total of 392 strands sleeved in a semi transparent grey sleeve. The cable here looks and feels high end and probably the best one from Kefine. It is a modular cable and provided is a 3.5mm plug and a 4.4mm plug.

Kefine also released a USB C modular head that is equipped with a Conexant CX31998 chipset with a combo of a MAX97220 amplifier chip and they support a maximum of 32 bits 384kHz. The sound here is commendable that is similar to most Conexant sound of a neutral, smooth yet detailed performance. This USB C head pairs really well with the Arnar by making them more refined especially in the bass texture and it is a simple yet effective solution for an everyday carry

Tone and Presentation

The sound presentation of the Arnar is a neutral bass boost presentation with a good warmth in the midrange alongside a smooth yet present high range. Tonal balance here is good with them leaning slightly towards a dark sound giving a velvety smooth overall sound. These IEMs excel in their musicalities and they provide a uber fun signature that is inoffensive yet having great technical chops. Dynamic range here is wide with superb extension in the low end and a slightly slow roll off in the high range. Though having a slightly dark tone, their overall details and clarity is above average.

Soundstage

The soundstage here is expansive with a great width and height partly due to their semi open back style, very competent in their price range. They also possess a 3D holographic spatial soundstage that is accurate which makes them a good pair of IEM even for gaming and movies as the sound placements are clear and accurate. They are slightly intimate and have a good immersive sound with a mild diffused field sound that projects sound around which has a rather large sized headroom with a good amount of air. The Arnar actually comes real close to a soundstage size of the famed Hidizs MP145.

Separation and Timbre

Separation here is another strength of the Arnar with a wide dynamic range that gives a wide stereo sound with no crosstalk issues that is able to scale up better with balanced connectivity. Cohesion here is decent and the planar and balanced armature does blend rather well in tandem but there is some minor gap from the midrange towards the higher region. Timbre here is rich, warm and punchy possessing great energy especially in the low range. They have the technical prowess of a planar and are tuned to be natural sounding in their timbre and with the help of a Knowles balanced armature to extend their overall details in the higher region. There is a tinge of metallic timbre present but they are dismissible as they are very minor.

Drivability

Rated at 13 ohms with a 107 db sensitivity, they are easily driven by any source as they don’t need much power to sound great with adequate amount of loudness but they do scale very well with high quality output source that gives better refinements. The Arnar does not pick up noise easily for their lower sensitivity making them a good pair of IEM for casual usage. Source matching is recommended especially with a neutral bright source but with some bassy source will actually make the bass a little too overwhelming for my taste. The Arnar is not that revealing but they are able to show some flaws in the recording and a good mastered track or higher bitrates files will actually give a little cleaner overall sound. These are not stage or studio monitors, instead a pair of IEMs that excels for music enjoyment though still capable to satisfy some critical listeners out there.

The Bass (Low)

The bass is a boosted bass that is above than being neutral and they are powerful, punchy and meaty, having a great authoritative presence bordering a basshead IEM. The bass here is the stand out part of the overall presentation but not too overpowering and IEM is not for purists that seek accuracy but rather the Arnar put a focus on the fun, musical that is alluring. The bass is energetic and possesses a textured, tight slam. The mid-bass lift here is slightly lifted and the overall bass is immersive with a capability of keeping up with busy tracks. Though having a big bass amount, they managed to stay controlled with a good layering that shows bass nuances well. Details and clarity here are great, producing a clean and clear bass response and resolution here is vivid with a good transparency as the bass is natural without being muddy nor bloaty. The bass has a good extension that gives ample amount of air. The sub-bass here is higher than the mid-bass amount completing a full bass response and the sub-bass rumble dives deep with a good impact.

The Mids

Midrange here has a neutral warm sound that has a mild forwardness and they are well balanced mids that have a focus in the lower midrange alongside a smooth upper midrange lift. The midrange has a good amount of warmth that possesses a rich, full-bodied that excels in lushness and they are organic in their presentation. Details here are superb with solid macro and micro details retrieval with great clarity all around. The body here is thick giving a deep yet clean midrange presence. The resolution here is vivid with a mild coloration present and they are quite organically accurate. Vocal presentation is fairly balanced with their smooth highs and boosted lows but they excel better with male vocals for their thickness and depth. The smooth upper midrange does feel a little low on brilliance but in a small margin and that gives a smooth musical sound. Instruments work well with lower range instruments but with some higher range like electric guitars, they do tend to lack aggression.

The Highs

The high range here is a neutral flat highs that has great extension all the way to the 20khz region and they are a smooth type of high range while having a good presence. Sparkle here is lively with a mild crisp decay but they aren’t a high range that has a good bite, instead they are leaning more towards an inoffensive high range that is fatigue free that suits treble sensitive users. Details here are great with high notes displayed cleanly without any sibilance or hiss. The high range resolves very well with a vivid presentation and the pace here is quick, capable of playing well with piercing sound like piercy genres like ACG or metal. The Arnar possesses a natural timbre but there are some very mild metallic overtones from the balanced armature drivers. Overall, the Arnar has a breathy timbre that has a good amount of air alongside a transparent high range that shows the music as intended. The high range here is suited for users who seek for smooth yet present highs that are inoffensive and free of sibilance.

Comparisons

VS Tinhifi T6 (USD119)

One of my all time favourites is a hybrid with a combo of micro planar and dynamic and they are priced slightly lower but also having a wide range of accessories that includes tuning nozzles. Build on the Arnar looks more beautiful and their cable looks more premium as well but value does goes to the T6

  • T6 has better sparkly presence and bite
  • Overall details are better on the Arnar but with clarity on both are similar
  • Arnar high range is smoother and less piercy with a touch more air.
  • Arnar is warmer and thicker with a more forward mids
  • Upper mids on T6 has a better brilliance
  • Vocals on Arnar sounds deeper while T6 perform better on female vocals
  • Bass amount in Arnar is bigger and meatier with a tighter slam alongside bigger sub-bass rumble
  • Bass on T6 is more neutral and sounds more natural and accurate
  • Arnar is more immersive and fun
  • Soundstage on the Arnar is wider and airier

Vs Hidizs MP145 Pro (149USD)

The latest iteration of a legend, the MP145 Pro is a single full-sized 14.5mm planar driver and has a huge IEM but ergonomically fits really well. Both have a similar warm tone but the overall sound of the MP145 Pro is more balanced especially in the lower range. Both are well accessorized with high quality accessories and tuning nozzles.

  • High range of both are smooth and inoffensive with an organic timbre but the Arnar sounds mildly more natural
  • Arnar has better extension with greater air
  • Treble on the MP145 Pro sounds more balanced while Arnar is more laid-back
  • Arnar mids is warmer and more forward
  • Both details and clarity are similar as well as resolution and transparency
  • MP145 Pro mids is more spacious
  • Vocals sounds cleaner on the MP145 Pro while the Arnar is lusher and sweeter
  • The bass amount on Arnar is bigger and meatier with more sub-bass amount but depth are similar on both
  • Arnar has a more textured bass
  • Soundstage on the MP145 Pro is wider and taller while airiness on both are similar

Final words

The Kefine Arnar is indeed a standout hybrid flagship that masterfully balances technical prowess with a lush, musical soul by pairing a 14.5mm planar driver with a Knowles balanced armature. Wrapped in a stunning CNC aluminum shell with an iconic Wish Window semi-open back design, it delivers an expansive, holographic soundstage and velvety smooth sound that features authoritative, textured bass and thick, organic mids. While it remains inoffensive and smooth in the treble to suit sensitive listeners, its modular cable and swappable tuning nozzles provide a slight versatility to refine its performance, making it a high value, immersive choice for those who prioritize long-term musical enjoyment over analytical monitoring. Though minor caveats are present like it being not as neutral and a rather lean high range, those are minimal and in exchange for a highly musical experience.
